This is the memorial site where Nigihayahi no Mikoto descended by order of Amaterasu Omikami (the Great Goddess of Amaterasu). In the classics, it is called "Kawakami Ikarugamine in Kawachi Province.

Since ancient times, it has been known as a place of practice for Shintoists and Shugen-do.The rocky grottoes formed by the numerous boulders are in some places wide caverns and in others narrow holes that a single person can barely pass through.The Amano River flows into the cave, cutting through the rocks and creating rapids, and it is said that even if you don't know any special practices, just visiting the rock caves is a good practice. The rock caves are open to visitors.In order to keep the caves as it was in the past, the following are the minimum safety measures required and visitors are asked to observe them.

1、Wearing a white robe called a gyogi, which is worn during ascetic training in Japan.（White sash）（Available at the shrine office）
2、Slippery shoes should be replaced with straw sandals. (Ibid.)
3、Age limit. (Between 10 and 75 years)
4、Not permitted after drinking.
5、Not open for viewing at night, when it rains or when the water level is high.

The traditional Japanese belief that megaliths and oddly shaped stones are the dwelling and descent of the spirit of the gods.Many of the Buddha cliffs are carved into rocks where gods are believed to dwell.
